Vented vs. Vent-Free Gas Logs

Vented gas logs require an open chimney damper and produce the most realistic flame pattern — tall, yellow flames that dance around the logs like a real wood fire. They're designed for appearance rather than heating efficiency, since much of the heat exits through the chimney. Vent-free gas logs operate with the damper closed, directing nearly all of the heat into the room. They're significantly more efficient as a heat source but produce a lower, bluer flame. Both types work in most standard masonry fireplaces, and many factory-built fireplaces accept gas log sets as well — check your fireplace manufacturer's specifications to confirm compatibility.
